Suicide Girls Moves to Video iPod and Podcasting
SuicideGirls, a site full of goth, punk, alternative girls with tattoos and piercings was the first adult website to release sexy iPod videos just a week after the release of the iPod video by Apple.
On october 19, they were announcing the launch of SGTV: a section of the website offering free 3 minutes sexy videos created specifically for the newly announced Apple iPod Video Player.
They started with ten downloadable videos of interviews and photo shots of the Suicide Girls models, encoded with Apple’s new H.264 codec.
SG’s Cofounder Lauren Suicide said later: “In 24 hours after the launch we had 500,000 downloads of the new featurettes, and then the three days after that we had one million downloads, which is huge.
It’s been pretty consistent since then, I think we’ll do a million downloads/week average.”
After the introduction of podcasts in iTunes in June 2005, Apple announced that in just two days customers had subscribed to more than one million of the free Podcasts in the iTunes podcast directory. Apple had sold 1 million videos only 19 days after they launched the video iPod and started selling TV shows, short films and music videos, on october 31st 2005.
SuicideGirls moved quick and the reward was big for being the first to independently produce sexy and original content created specifically for download to the iPod. They embraced this new audio-video delivery technology to communicate more efficiently with their fans and to distribute exclusive content from their site to a wider audience.
